Over the past ten years, John McGuire has composed three pieces for two string trios: Jump Cuts (2012), Double Bars (2017) and Playground (2021). The pieces realise compositional principles that McGuire has continued to develop over the course of his work and that can be seen as a synthesis of aspects of European serialism and American minimalism.

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of composer John McGuire, GIMIK e.V. organised a concert with the world premieres of Jump Cuts and Double Bars.

The concert took place on Friday 16 June at the Kunststation Sankt Peter, and the live recording was broadcast on Thursday 18 August at 0.00 am as part of the New Music programme on Deutschland Radio Kultur, presented by Hubert Steins.

The project was funded by the Cultural Office of the City of Cologne and the Kunststiftung NRW.
